Newborn Photography

Disclaimer
As someone who went through fertility treatment and came out on the other side with two babies, I’m hyper-sensitive to the affect that newborn (and young family) photos have on people — while some melt with pride and joy, others cringe with envy, frustration, and sadness. I’ve been there, and as such, I’m committed to making fertility challenges a normalized subject on my website and social media.
The Experience
Newborn sessions are imperfect. Just being honest. Babies poop and get hangry; they’ll need breaks to be changed and fed and I NEVER want them to feel uncomfortable or hungry — or you to feel rushed. When they’re hungry, feed them! When they poop, change them! If your hormones are still raging, take a break, get some fresh air. There’s no “hard stop”.
The Approach
I photograph newborn sessions in the same way that I do “regular” family sessions. That is, it’s totally natural and focused on togetherness and connection; I don’t bring props (except for a few swaddles) or pose newborns. If you’re looking for angelic, posed photos of your sleeping baby, I would encourage you to hire one of the many talented photographers who specialize in that style — that’s not me. That said, I often recommend that the baby be swaddled for a portion of the photos — to help them relax and squirm less, but that’s it. In most of the photos we’ll take, your family will be holding the baby. We will of course take some photos of the baby alone, though.
