The Experience

YAY family photos!!! Said no one ;). If you're like most, you dread having your photo taken and fear that your kids will be hot messes. I get it. But, I promise this experience is atypical. The #1 thing I hear from Moms AND Dads after sessions is "wait, that was actually really fun". And for kids, the time feels more like play than anything else. I’m not worried about hot messes, but I need you to let go of perfection. Kids are uninhibited and wear their hearts on their sleeves -- I have low expectations for listening and high expectations for feelings. And you should too!

And be prepared to share your favorite artists or genres because I love to stream music. If you ask me to choose, get ready for Motown or Jock Jams!

The Approach

At first, I was drawn to Documentary Family Photography for it’s authenticity. This is a completely unguided approach, in which I’m an observer and give no direction.

However, I quickly realized that all families -- including the ones who say they only want candid photos, show up and say "ok tell me what to do!". And I get it — I say the same exact thing when the roles are reversed!

My approach is a blend of the two and is considered Lifestyle Family Photography. I guide you to ensure flattering, well-composed photos that don’t feel awkward, and keep you moving and engaged with prompts that build connection. You will never hear me say “Cheese!”; silly voices and faces, terrible dance moves, general goofiness... that's more my style. This all helps to elicit natural smiles and expressions, but the real candid moments are captured in-between.

So, unless you are interested in a true Family Documentary session (YES PLEASE!), in which I'm purely photographing as an observer, you can expect a Lifestyle approach. And might I add, a damn good time.
